DUBAI’S TOP DESIGNERS SHARE THEIR EXPERTISE

A busy programme of workshops and panel discussions for seasoned professionals looking to up-skill, and insights and advice for the younger generation just starting out.

Dubai Design Week offers a host of workshops for design and architecture professionals to up-skill during their visit.

360° Decoro demonstrates how natural materials can be duplicated at Fake or Real on 25 October, and on 27 October Eight Inc hosts a series of talks entitled Design Human Experience in their d3 studio. For visitors who want more in-depth insights, Tinkah offers a three-day workshop on typography from 3-7pm on 24, 25 and 26 October, Etqaan presents Craft Journey from 25 to 27 and the Gracious F explores colour psychology and harmonising objects in a natural environment in a series of Interior Objects workshops twice a day at 11am – noon and 6-7pm from 24 – 29 October.

For tips on the latest technology, d-town explores the how projection mapping and the materials library will affect the House of the Future, and d-NAT offers a full-day 3D workshop over in Tashkeel.

Master draughtsman Shangoo Manupriam of Urban Sketchers [www.facebook.com/urbansketchersdubai] will lead a group of sketchers to record the urban spaces of d3 and main events to create a visual record for social media. From 3-5pm on 28 October, the team will create drawings for an Adult Colouring Book which will be distributed to visitors with a pack of crayons. If you’d like to join in, check their Facebook page for time and venue and just turn up with a sketchbook, pencils, pens and watercolours. All skill levels welcome.

Over in Media City, learn to create pop-up cards using three different techniques (the V fold, the pop-up layer and the V fold with flaps) courtesy of creative media institute SAE which hosts Paper Engineering: Intro to Pop-ups from 6pm – 8pm on 28 October in Classroom 5, SAE Institute, Knowledge Village, 3rd Level, Block 17. Further afield in JLT, Orikami Lab explores the relationships between designers with a Collaborative Craftsmen Workshop from 2-4pm on 28 October.

Young professionals

Dubai’s established design professionals will proffer advice to the next generation of creative talent throughout Dubai Design Week’s six days.

Pallavi Dean hosts Powerhouse Public Speaking for Design Gurus from 11am – 1.30pm on 26 October, demonstrating how to present, pitch and promote design ideas. Sharabassy Built Environment Studio shares tips and strategy with its Creativity Enhancement workshop, and S2 Interiors and FN Design Gallery join forces in Alserkal Avenue to teach young designers how to collaborate with boutique interior design studios, architects, developers and local authorities.

As part of its commitment to innovation and design, Spanish bathroom manufacturers Roca Sanitorio will host a One Day Design Challenge from 9am – 9pm on 29 October in the A4 Space in Alserkal Avenue. Students and young professionals under 30 are challenged to create original solutions and innovative concepts for the bathroom in just one day, giving them the chance to experience the professional environment.
