National College of Art & Design
This hands-on workshop explored the visual dialogue between letterforms from different scripts.
This workshop explored the visual dialogue between scripts, focusing on rhythm, contrast, flow, modularity and cultural exchange. Participants deconstructed, remixed and invented hybrid alphabets using shapes, grids, stencils or cut letters. All work was paper-based, with laptops optional for research. They drew, swapped and combined words from different languages to create a collaborative “Lingua Franca” type specimen poster. Led by John Paul Dowling, Head of Communication Design at NCAD, the session reflected his international expertise in typographic research, education and practice.
