American University of Sharjah x University of Sharjah
Prof. Tania Ursomarzo and Prof. Iman Ibrahim with students from the American University of Sharjah and the University of Sharjah explore the geometry and environmental logic of mollusk shells.
This project translates the natural geometry and environmental intelligence of mollusk shells into an adaptable modular installation that responds to airflow, sustainability and flexibility in construction. Inspired by the layered concave structure of bivalve shells, the design features interlocking modules that can be easily assembled, disassembled and reconfigured. This system allows for relocation, repair and structural reinforcement, reflecting how mollusk shells naturally redirect water flow to minimise erosion.
Functioning as a permeable boundary, the installation actively interacts with wind. Each tapered module creates a funneling effect that accelerates airflow applying the Venturi principle to promote passive cooling in outdoor environments. The modules are fabricated from a composite of recycled low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and crushed seashells collected from UAE beaches, combining flexibility, textural richness, and environmental responsibility. The production process reimagines the use of hydraulic press sheets to form curved, high-performance elements from waste-based materials, showcasing an innovative approach to fabrication.
By merging natural systems thinking with modular construction and low-impact materials, the project demonstrates a new model for responsive, repairable and ecologically grounded installations. It highlights how biomimicry and material experimentation can foster sustainable architectural practices suited to dynamic urban and environmental contexts.
About American University of Sharjah & University of Sharjah:
