Returning with its most extensive line-up of hands-on workshops to date, the Making Space will take centre stage at this year’s Dubai Design Week, with activities driven by environmentally friendly materials and practices.

Under the theme of ’Paper, Plastic + Play’, the week-long programme of over 80 activities facilitated by independent makers, designers and small businesses working in the UAE will enable participants to gain an insight into the potential of diverse materials. Visitors can enjoy a range of papermaking activities, including origami and paper collages, while plastic themed workshops will see the NYUAD Plastics Research Lab bring informative sessions into DIY plastic bag recycling and bioplastics education to raise awareness about plastic alternatives.

Highlights will include; an interactive henna workshop led by Dr. Azra, who will guide participants through the process of mixing henna whilst teaching the history, culture, health benefits and importance of the craft in celebration of thousands of years of tradition; an eco-papermaking workshop facilitated by Quarter Moon Studio will teach participants how to recycle waste paper, using traditional tools and techniques; and a tatreez workshop conducted by social enterprise 81 Designs, which aims to preserve this ancient Palestinian embroidery technique, in about the history of the craft and have a turn at trying out tatreez embroidery themselves.

On the weekend, 12-13 November, visitors will have the opportunity to learn how to make notebooks out of camel leather, create DIY clay-paint palettes or learn how to up-cycle plastic waste into a modern piece of quilted artwork, the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Gulf Chapter will host a workshop for aspiring young architects titled ‘Fantastical Future Cities’, which will celebrate World Children's Day in a fun-filled activity where children can unleash their creativity and make their very own net-zero carbon City, inspired entirely by their own imaginations.

Activities are held in the Making Space every day during Dubai Design Week in d3, held from 8-13 November, 2021.
