As an organization that supports artists and creative communities, Art Jameel inaugurates the Jameel Arts Centre as the first contemporary arts museum in Dubai, to open coinciding with Dubai Design Week 2018.
The building, located in Dubai Cultural Village along the Dubai Creek, is a three storey multi-disciplinary space, featuring 1,200 square metres of dedicated gallery space with an additional 300 square metres open-access research centre, a flexible studio and events spaces, as well as a café and a bookshop.
The modern, simplistic and elegant appearance of the Jameel Arts Centre building can be attributed to award-winning Serie Architects under Christopher Lee, specializing in architecture, urban design and research with a focus on cultural, civil and educational buildings.
Made up of a series of boxes of varying dimensions, connected by a one storey colonnade and seven courtyards allowing immense potential and flexibility in the function of the building, Jameel Arts Centre will present curated contemporary art exhibitions whilst acting as a hub for educational and research initiatives. The intimate spaces will be well suited for capsule exhibitions, while the large galleries with soaring heights will showcase sculptural and installation works
Furthermore, The Jameel Arts Centre will feature seven desert-themed courtyards, each based on the theme of a distinct desert environment including rare plants sourced from the UAE and around the world. The courtyards are designed by Anouk Vogel, a Swiss-Dutch architect with an expertise in creating art out of greenery and spaces.
While the inaugural programme will be announced in September, it includes exhibitions drawn in part from the Art Jameel Collection, as well as collaborative shows, both in-house and with other curators and institutions.
