Alter
Using handcrafted recycled cement tiles created from waste from Rajasthan's stone quarries, a ludo game is transformed into a full-scale playing field.
Playing Field transforms Ludo into a full-scale installation made entirely from Alter’s handmade recycled cement tiles, each individually patterned and pigmented using waste from Rajasthan’s stone quarries. Drawing on Ludo’s origins in Pachisi, the installation explores how a familiar game can bring people together through shared play.
There are no tokens. Sixteen visitors become the playing pieces, with four people on each team. The familiar rules require little explanation, allowing players to interact, compete and spend time together. Because the game cannot be played alone, participation begins by inviting others to join.
The installation turns a game board into a floor, using discarded stone material to create a space for gathering and play. Over six days, visitors encounter a shared activity that brings together people who may already know the game and those meeting for the first time.
About Alter
Alter is a UAE design brand making handmade cement tiles from reclaimed stone quarry waste, construction waste and recycled cement. The brand focuses on floor design, with tiles designed to be repeated across a room, deliberately misaligned or used individually. Colour comes first, followed by pattern, with the room informing how the tiles are used. Alter’s work is rooted in making tiles from waste materials.
