Palm & Palazzo Design Studio
An installation reinterpreting the traditional Bahraini dikka as a connection between private domestic life and the social world of the street.
BAYN explores the relationship between privacy and social connection through a contemporary reinterpretation of traditional Bahraini architecture. Historically, Bahraini homes turned inward to protect family life, while the traditional dikka, a simple bench positioned along the house, offered a place to sit, observe passers-by, exchange greetings and remain connected to the neighbourhood.
The installation reinterprets this relationship between the private world within and the social world beyond. The wall separates them, while the bench connects them. Rather than recreating the traditional Bahraini home, BAYN translates this familiar spatial and social relationship into a contemporary setting, exploring how architecture can protect privacy without creating isolation and foster connection without sacrificing intimacy.
