Dubai Design Week presents the opportunity for designers, architects, companies and collectives to develop an installation specifically for an outdoor area of Dubai Design District (d3) to be unveiled at Dubai Design Week 2023 in Dubai Design District (d3) taking place 7-12 November.

Design proposals should be innovative and incorporate sustainable and socially responsible materials in production. Installations that directly address the environment can apply to be selected to remain for COP28.

There is no fee for selected installations to take part and all installations will be included in Dubai Design Week’s regional and international PR and marketing campaign. In addition, individual designers can apply for a production bursary of up to AED50,000 to go towards the cost of production.

Criteria & Conditions:

  • Proposals must be suitable for outdoors
  • Produced entirely or partially in the UAE within a clear timeline to be installed and unveiled at Dubai Design Week in d3 taking place from 7-12 November
  • Follow a responsible design approach, taking into account sustainable use of materials and production processes, construction, installation and operational processes
  • Proposals need to be original and the participant confirms that they are the owner of all appropriate intellectual property rights in the submission
  • Due to the number of public events hosted by d3, the proposal must be movable
  • Wind calculations must be considered for anything over 2.5m high
  • The weight must be less than 300 kg per square meter

Submission Material:

Submissions should include a detailed description of the installation, including its concept, materials, and technical requirements. Additionally, creatives should provide sketches or visual representations of their proposed installation.

Please prepare the required documents below to be included in the following form;

  • Design concept statement (300-500 words)
  • Practitioner's portfolio of previous works and CV (PDF)
  • A minimum of five high resolution digital files showing the proposed concept – physical models, renderings, architectural drawings and/or sketches and visual representation are encouraged

Selection process:

The jury includes local and international creative professionals, architects and curators, with experience in commissioning and producing interactive works for the public realm.
